The Vow of Chastity

as lived according to
the Constitutions
of the Society of the Immaculata

1. By the Vow of chastity we consecrate our whole person to God Alone, and place ourselves under the obligation of perfect continence in celibacy. We do this freely and definitively, out of love, to commit ourselves with undivided hearts to the service of God and our fellow man. We willingly sacrifice all pleasures forbidden by the natural and Divine law, as well as the sacrifice of pleasures which this law permits in the married state.

2.    In the Kingdom which is to come, there will be neither marrying nor being given in marriage. All will be children of God (cf. Lk. 20L: 35-36). Between the children of God there will be no other bonds but those forged by fraternal love. In the present time, the Society strives to reveal clearly, here and now, what we shall all be together, forever in the Kingdom of heaven.

3.    We remain faithful to our Vow of chastity by remaining in communion with the disposition of the Immaculata, the handmaid of the Lord, who never withdrew her pledge: “Let it be done unto me according to thy word” Lk 1:38).

4.  To remain faithful to the commitment of our celibacy we have two privileged means: union with Jesus Christ and the Immaculata in prayer and the Sacraments, which make us certain of the grace of God.

5.    The perfection of chastity called forth by consecrated celibacy does not come into being all at once; it is the fruit of a long conquest, an appropriate discipline and mortification, and exacting decisions made once again. Without presuming our own strength, we remain prudent and vigilant, willingly employing the natural means which aid in mastering the self.

6.    In order to mortify the sense of vision, and to keep the mind from descending into idle curiosity, we observe custody of the eyes at all times when they are idle.

7.    Since it is proper to the consecrated soul to love God in the most perfect way possible, and since the affections of the heart accompany and confirm the movement of the will toward the object loved, the missionary shall have God as the primary object of his affections.

8.    Missionaries shall avoid all unnecessary contact with women.

9.    When conversing with women, we manifest a reserve in our demeanor and bearing that shall manifest our relentless devotion to perfect chastity.

10.    We avoid all occasions of sin against the virtue of perfect chastity, be they due to lack of proper dress, unclean movies, impure television shows, magazines, advertisements, etc.

11.    We always observe the virtue of modesty, especially while passing to and from the shower, during recreation, etc.

12.    Our conversations should always be edifying, never sinking to the level of worldly off-colour humour.

13.    We do not frequent bars, taverns, or other worldly or scandalous places, unless to carry out sacerdotal functions (Extreme Unction).
